Volume two · why, not what

Theory

The manual tells you what to do on Saturday. This is the argument underneath it — where the ideas came from, what they are actually claiming, and which of them are still unsettled.

The claim: every tactical system in football is a different answer to one question — how do you manufacture a numerical, positional or qualitative advantage in the specific place the ball is about to go, faster than the opponent can remove it? Systems differ in where they choose to fight, not in what they want.

Space

The pitch is not uniform. Every tactical idea is a theory about which parts of it are worth having.

Value is not distance

The intuitive model is that space closer to the goal is more valuable. It isn't quite that. The goal is a small rectangle, and what determines a shot's worth is the angle it subtends as much as the distance to it. Ten metres from the byline at the corner flag is close to the goal and nearly worthless; twelve metres out and central is the most valuable square on the pitch. Value radiates in a cone, not a circle.

That single geometric fact generates most of modern attacking football. The cutback exists because it moves the ball from a low-angle position to a high-angle one while the defence is facing the wrong way. Crossing from deep is unpopular because it delivers into the highest-density area at the worst possible arrival angle. And the half-space is prized because it is the shallowest position from which the angle to goal is still open.

The half-space, argued properly

The manual asserts that the half-space is where modern attacking lives. Here is the actual argument, in three parts.

  • Vision. From the touchline, roughly half the useful pitch is behind you. From the centre, opponents surround you on all sides. From the half-space, the byline, the penalty spot and the far side are all in one field of view, and you can face all three by turning your hips forty-five degrees rather than a hundred and eighty.
  • Angle. The shooting cone is still meaningfully open, so a defender must treat you as a shooting threat, which forces him to close you, which is what creates the space you actually wanted.
  • Ownership. It falls in the seam between a centre-back and a full-back. Every marking scheme has to decide who owns it, and any hesitation in that decision is the half-second an attacker is farming.

Note that the third reason is not geometric at all. It is organisational — it exists because defences are made of people who have been given jobs. That is worth holding on to: a lot of what looks like spatial theory is really a theory about the failure modes of instructions.

Angles of support

A player with the ball does not need options. He needs options at angles he can use in one touch. Three players in a straight line offer one forward pass and no way to change direction. The same three in a triangle offer two passes, a lay-off, and a direction change — and critically, the receiver can play first time, because the ball arrives across his body rather than into it.

This is why coaches shout about shape rather than effort: the same three players, differently arranged, are worth roughly double.

Occupying space and attacking space are different jobs

A subtle distinction that resolves a lot of arguments. A player standing in a space occupies it — he freezes a defender and takes the space out of circulation for both teams. A player running into a space attacks it — and for that, the space must be empty.

You cannot do both in the same square metre, which is why the discipline of "who holds and who runs" is the actual content of most attacking coaching. A winger who drifts inside when the eight is already there hasn't gained an option; he has removed one, because now a single defender covers two attackers and the touchline is free for nobody. Overload is not the same as crowding.

Superiority chains

You will never have an advantage everywhere. What a good structure produces is a chain: a numerical advantage at the back that survives one pass, which becomes a positional advantage in midfield, which becomes a qualitative advantage — a 1-v-1 — in the final third. Each link only has to hold long enough to reach the next.

This reframes the counting from the manual. You are not counting to find out whether you are winning. You are counting to find out where the chain breaks, because that is the only place a change is worth making.

Time

The under-taught half. Space gets all the diagrams; almost every advantage is actually temporal.

The ball is faster than the players

A pass travels at twenty to thirty metres per second. A sprinting footballer manages about nine. So a team that moves the ball moves faster than a team that carries it — which is the entire argument for possession football, stated honestly.

But there is a countervailing fact that possession dogma tends to skip: a pass gives the defence its travel time to reorganise. While the ball is in the air, ten defenders are shuffling. A carry does not grant that. This is why a centre-back stepping out with the ball is so disruptive relative to how simple it looks — he advances the ball without giving anyone time to adjust, and he forces a decision that nobody's job description covers.

The synthesis: pass to move the ball across the pitch, carry to break a line. Teams that only do one are half a team.

Tempo, and the pause

Constant speed is both predictable and exhausting. Good teams play in gears. The pattern that recurs at every level is slow, slow, fast — circulate at a tempo that invites the block to settle and slide, then accelerate on a trigger the opponent cannot see coming.

The most sophisticated version is la pausa: the deliberate hesitation on the ball, holding it a beat longer than the situation seems to allow, specifically to let a runner arrive or a defender commit. It looks like indecision and it is the opposite. Riquelme built a career on it. It is also the single hardest thing to coach, because it requires a player who is comfortable being the slowest thing on the pitch while everyone screams at him.

Why the third man is a time mechanism

The manual treats the third-man combination as a spatial pattern. It isn't, really. Geometrically the defender is in a perfectly good position. What defeats him is that his eyes go to the ball at the moment it leaves A, and for roughly half a second his attention is committed to a pass he is not involved in. The third man's advantage is manufactured latency — you are spending the defender's reaction time, not beating his position.

That is why the timing rule is absolute: C must be moving before the first pass. If he starts after it, he is running into the half-second instead of arriving at the end of it.

Where the levels actually differ

It is worth being blunt about this because it reframes what improvement means. Between a good amateur and a professional, top speed differs by a little and technical range differs by less than people assume. What differs enormously is the time between the picture arriving and the decision leaving. Professionals have pre-computed the answer, because they scanned, so the ball arriving triggers execution rather than deliberation.

This is why scanning is not a nice-to-have. It is the mechanism by which the decision gets moved from after the ball arrives to before it.

Positional play

The dominant idea in European football, stated as the system of rules it actually is.

Rules, not instructions

The crucial thing about juego de posición is that it is not a set of patterns to memorise. It is a small set of occupation rules which, if obeyed, generate correct behaviour in situations the coach never anticipated. That is why it scales: an instruction covers the case it describes, a rule covers every case.

The reference grid. Five vertical lanes and four horizontal bands. Players take up positions relative to the grid rather than to the ball, which is precisely what distinguishes this tradition from the next chapter's. The rules below are constraints on how those cells may be filled.
One per cell
Never two players in the same lane at the same height. Two players in one cell solve the same problem and one of them is wasted — and worse, one defender now covers both.
Max three in a line
No more than three players across any horizontal band, and no more than two in any vertical lane. Both caps exist to guarantee passing angles: a fourth man in a line adds a body but no new angle.
Hold the width
Both touchlines occupied at all times, by someone, regardless of where the ball is. Width is not an attacking choice; it is what makes the pitch big enough for everything else to work.
Occupy between the lines
At least one player, usually two, permanently in the band between the opponent's midfield and defence. If nobody is there, the opponent's two lines can defend as one.
Behind the ball
A fixed rest-defence base — the 2-3 or 3-2 — maintained during attacks. The structure is what permits the counterpress.

Obey those and a 3-2-5 emerges without anyone being told to form a 3-2-5. That is the whole trick.

The free man is the objective

Positional play is often described as being about possession. It isn't. Possession is a by-product. The objective is to always have a free man, and to move the ball to wherever he currently is faster than the opponent can go and cover him. A team playing this way passes sideways not because sideways is good but because each sideways pass forces the defensive block to slide, and a sliding block generates a free man somewhere else.

Which means the honest criticism lands precisely: if the opponent refuses to slide — a disciplined low block that concedes the ball and defends the box — then no free man is generated where it matters, and you get sterile domination. Seventy per cent possession and eleven shots from outside the area. The manual's first round-three question is exactly this problem.

What it costs

Three real costs, worth naming because advocates rarely do. It requires players who can receive under pressure in tight areas, which is a genuine selection constraint rather than a coaching one. It is slow to install — the rules only produce good behaviour once they are automatic, and until then they produce hesitation. And it can become an identity rather than a method, at which point a team keeps playing out from the back against a press that is eating them alive because that is who they think they are.

Relationism

The counter-tradition. Not the absence of structure — a structure organised around the ball rather than the pitch.

The core disagreement

Positional play organises players relative to fixed reference points on the pitch: lanes, bands, cells. Relationism organises them relative to each other and the ball. Where a positional side spreads to occupy the grid, a relational side clusters near the ball to create local combination density, and the shape that results is emergent rather than prescribed.

Strongly associated with Brazilian football and articulated most clearly in recent years through Fernando Diniz's Fluminense, though the tradition long predates the label. It is worth being careful here: relationism as a named theory is a fairly recent English-language framing of a much older way of playing.

The mechanisms

Tabela

The one-twoThe basic unit. Not an occasional flourish but the default method of progression — give and go, repeatedly, at close range, faster than a defender can turn.

Escadinha

The little ladderSupporting players arranged in a diagonal staircase behind and beside the ball, so there is always a short backward-and-sideways option at a usable angle. Congestion by design.

Corta-luz

Cutting the lightA player lets the ball run through his legs or past him to a teammate behind. Beats a defender who has committed to the man he can see.

Ball-near overload

Everyone comesDeliberately crowding the ball's zone. Positional play would call this a violation; here it is the point, because density creates combination options a spread shape cannot.

Why it is hard to defend and hard to coach

Hard to defend because a man-oriented scheme has nothing stable to grab — the reference points keep dissolving — and a zonal scheme gets overloaded locally while the far side, which it is protecting, is not being attacked. Hard to coach because the mechanisms depend on players reading each other, which is the socio-affective superiority from the manual's first chapter: it is built by time together, not by instruction.

The useful synthesis

These are usually presented as rivals, and treated as rivals they generate a lot of noise. The more useful framing is that they are answers to different opponents. Against an organised zonal block that will not come out, structured occupation stretches it until a gap appears. Against a man-oriented, aggressive press, relational proximity dissolves the reference points that press depends on. A coach who can only do one is beatable by choosing the right opponent. The failure state, as ever, is doing neither on purpose — a team drilled in positional discipline whose players keep drifting toward the ball has no structure and no combinations.

Pressing

A taxonomy, because "pressing" describes at least four different activities that fail in different ways.

Three independent axes

Most confusion about pressing comes from collapsing three separate decisions into one word. They vary independently, and a coherent press is a deliberate choice on each.

Height
Where you begin contesting: high, mid, or low. Determines how much territory you concede and how far your defensive line must be from your own goal.
Orientation
Man-oriented — each presser has a man. Zonal — each presser has a space. Ball-oriented — the whole block shifts to the ball's side. Passing-lane oriented — pressers cover options rather than people, which is the cover-shadow school.
Trigger
What starts it. A backward pass, a bad touch, a receiver facing his own goal, a pass to the touchline, a slow or lofted ball, a weak-footed player receiving on his weak side.

A high man-oriented press triggered by a backward pass is a completely different animal from a mid zonal block triggered by entry into the middle third, and calling both "pressing" is how coaching conversations go wrong.

The trap is the point

The naive model of pressing is closing space until the opponent has none. The professional model is nearly the opposite: you deliberately leave exactly one option open, make it the most attractive one, and have four players already arranged around where it leads. The touchline is the standard trap because it defends for you — a player receiving there has lost half his available angles before anyone arrives.

This reframes the cover shadow from a defensive skill into an offensive one. You are not blocking passes; you are selecting the pass your opponent will play.

Pressing is not counterpressing

They share a word and almost nothing else, because the starting conditions are opposite. A press attacks an organised team that has chosen where to put everyone, so it must be coordinated, patient and trigger-driven. A counterpress attacks a disorganised team in the two or three seconds before it can arrange itself, so it must be immediate and local, and it works precisely because it does not wait for a trigger.

Hence the different formulations you will hear — Klopp's five seconds, Rangnick's eight — which are the same idea with different tolerances: there is a decay window after a turnover, and the whole value is inside it.

Why amateur presses fail

Almost always the same two ways, and neither is effort. Nobody covers. Two players go, the pass beats them both, and the space they left is now the opponent's best chance of the half. A press is a ladder: first man goes, second man takes the nearest option, third man holds the space behind. Or the line does not push up. The front presses, the back four stays deep, and a thirty-metre band opens through the middle. Pressing high with a deep line is not a compromise between two systems; it is the worst available shape.

Defending

The theory that made modern defending possible, and the one decision it all reduces to.

The reference points

Arrigo Sacchi's formulation is still the clearest statement of what a defender is doing. A defender is orienting himself continuously against four things: the ball, the opponent, his teammates, and the space — and the order of priority shifts with where the ball is. When the ball is far, space and teammates dominate; when it is near, ball and opponent do.

The reason this mattered historically is that it replaced a system in which a defender's reference point was a single man, whom he followed wherever that man went. Man-marking has an obvious structural flaw: it lets the attacking team decide where your defenders stand. Zonal defending refuses that, on the grounds that space does not move — you can organise around it, and the opponent cannot drag it out of position.

Compactness as the master variable

Sacchi's teams are remembered for a specific number: keeping the distance between the highest and deepest player to around twenty-five metres. The number matters less than what it encodes. A compact block means every pass into it can be pressured by someone, and the defensive scheme becomes a property of the team rather than of any individual.

The cost is explicit and was accepted deliberately: you concede the space behind, so you must play a high line and use offside as an active weapon, and you concede the far touchline, so you must accept the switch. Both are cheaper than what you gain. That is a trade, stated as a trade — which is what a real tactical decision looks like.

The step

Everything above is preamble to the single hardest decision in defending: when a player receives in front of you, do you step or do you hold?

Step, and if you are wrong the space you vacated is behind your own back line with a runner in it. Hold, and he turns, and now he is running at a retreating defence with his head up. There is no safe answer, which is why it is the decision that separates centre-backs. The inputs are: can he turn (is he already facing you?), is there a runner behind you, is your cover in place, and how good is he. Elite defenders are not the ones who step aggressively or the ones who hold; they are the ones who read those four inputs correctly at speed.

The general principle

Defending is not the act of winning the ball. It is the act of reducing your opponent's option set until the remaining options are ones you have prepared for. A tackle is what happens when that has already worked. This is why tackle counts mislead so badly as an evaluation tool, and why the best defensive performances often look uneventful.

Transition

Why the moment is special, stated more precisely than the manual does.

The asymmetry

In a settled phase, both teams are organised and the attacking team must manufacture an advantage from nothing. At a turnover, one already exists and is simply lying there: the team that just lost the ball has players committed forward, no defensive shape, and is facing the wrong way. Nobody had to create that advantage. It was donated.

Which is why transition is the highest-yield phase and also the one with the shortest shelf life. Organisation is restored in a handful of seconds. Every framework you will hear — five seconds, eight seconds, six — is an estimate of the same decay curve, and the exact number matters far less than the recognition that there is one.

The two coherent answers

On losing the ball, only two responses are internally consistent, and the choice determines almost everything else about a team.

Counterpress

Attack the ball-winner immediately with everyone near it. Works because he is momentarily the most pressable player on the pitch and because you have bodies close by from attacking. Requires a rest-defence base, or a beaten press is a clean run at your goal.

Drop and reform

Retreat instantly into the block and concede the ball. Wins fewer turnovers high, concedes almost no counters. Requires a genuine outlet, or you absorb pressure for ninety minutes with no relief.

Both are respectable. The failure state is the one every badly-coached team occupies: two players half-press, three half-drop, and the team is neither compact nor aggressive. Note that this is not a spectrum with a sensible middle. It is a genuine either-or, and the middle is strictly worse than both ends.

Rest defence as a precondition, not a preference

The thing most often missed: counterpressing is not a defensive behaviour, it is an attacking structure. A team can only counterpress if, at the moment it lost the ball, it had players positioned to do so. That positioning is decided during the attack, not after it. So a coach who wants a counterpressing team is really specifying an attacking shape — which is why a 3-2-5, with its explicit five-man base behind the ball, keeps appearing in teams whose defining trait people describe as aggression.

Read those bills carefully and a pattern emerges: nobody has found a system without one. Every school is a decision about which weakness you would rather have. Coaches who claim otherwise are selling something.

The arc

Each dominant idea created the conditions for the idea that beat it. That is the whole history in one sentence.

Not progress — an argument. Each move on this chart is a response to a specific problem the previous consensus could not solve, and each answer generated the problem that produced the next one. There is no reason to think the current consensus is the end of it.
Attack → defence
Early formations were front-loaded because the sport had not yet worked out that stopping goals was as valuable as scoring them. The back line thickened and the answer was the counter-attack.
Defence → movement
Rigid man-marking systems could be beaten by players who refused to stay in the positions the markers were assigned to. Positional interchange was the answer to being marked.
Movement → space
If players move constantly, marking men becomes impossible, so defend the space instead. Zonal defending and compactness were the answer to interchange.
Space → possession
A compact block cannot be run through, so you have to move it until it deforms. Positional play was the answer to compactness.
Possession → the turnover
A team that keeps the ball is organised almost all the time — except in the instant it loses it. Counterpressing was the answer to possession.
Turnover → press resistance
If losing the ball is fatal, become very hard to press: goalkeepers who pass, centre-backs who carry, structures with a permanent spare man. The current consensus is the answer to gegenpressing.
And now
Two live answers to a game that has become very good at structured possession: relational football, which dissolves the reference points, and the set-piece programme, which ignores open play altogether. It is genuinely not settled which matters more.

Measurement

Every metric is a compression. The only question that matters is what got thrown away.

A possession-value surface. Illustrative, not fitted — the shape is what matters. Value rises steeply toward goal and collapses toward the corners, because value tracks the angle the goal subtends, not the distance to it. A model like this is what converts "he moved the ball forward" into a number.
xG
Measures the probability a given shot becomes a goal, from its location, type and context. Throws away everything before the shot — a team that generates nothing has no xG to be unlucky with — and it says nothing about whether the shot was the best available option.
xT
Expected threat, introduced by Karun Singh in 2018. Lays a value surface over a grid of the pitch and credits a player for the change in value between where a pass or carry started and where it ended. Throws away defensive actions and shots entirely, and — the important one — it typically cannot see whether the player was under pressure when he did it.
Packing
Invented by former professional Stefan Reinartz and commercialised through Impect, prominent from Euro 2016. Counts the opponents a pass or carry takes out of the game by putting them behind the ball. Closest public metric to the manual's "count eliminated defenders, not completed passes". Throws away whether the bypassed players mattered.
PPDA
Passes an opponent completes per defensive action, measured in their build-up area. A proxy for pressing intensity — lower means more aggressive. Throws away whether the press was any good: a team that presses constantly and badly scores identically to one that presses well.
Field tilt
Your share of the two teams' final-third passes. A better possession statistic than possession, because it measures territorial dominance rather than ball-holding. Throws away penetration — you can dominate field tilt passing sideways in front of a block, which is round three, question one all over again.

The general lesson, which matters more than any of them

Each of these compresses a chaotic twenty-two-body system into one number, and each does it by discarding something specific. The professional use of them is not to ask "what is his xT" but to ask "what would this metric fail to see about this player, and can I go and look at that directly?"

Which is the same discipline as the manual's chapter on isolating variables, applied to numbers instead of claims. A metric is a rival explanation generator: for any number you are shown, the useful question is what else would produce that number.

The honest gap

There is still no good public metric for the things this manual says matter most — scanning, body orientation, movement before the pass, positional defending, the decision not to dive in. Event data records what happened to the ball, and almost everything decisive happens away from it. Tracking data closes part of that gap and is mostly not public. Anyone who tells you the numbers have solved player evaluation is describing the twenty per cent of football that is easy to record.

Training theory

How a game model gets into eleven people. The part that decides whether any of the above is worth anything.

Tactical periodization

Developed by Vítor Frade at the University of Porto and carried into the professional game by coaches including Mourinho and Villas-Boas. Its organising claim is that a team should be trained through its game model — the set of behaviours that define how it plays across the four moments — and that everything else, including physical conditioning, is subordinate to that.

Two ideas do most of the work:

  • The supra-principle of specificity. Everything in training must derive from the specific game context. Fitness is never separated from the ball, because a footballer's fitness is the ability to make football decisions while tired, which running laps does not train.
  • The morphocycle. The training week as a repeating pattern, in which strength, endurance and speed are each emphasised on their own day, always paired with the tactical principles that naturally demand them. The repetition is the point: it produces habits, and habits are what survive contact with a match.

Whether you adopt the full framework or not, the underlying claim is hard to argue with and almost universally violated at amateur level: a team plays the way it trains, and a team that trains fitness separately from football has decided to be fit at something other than football.

Constraints, not instructions

The complementary idea, from the ecological-dynamics tradition. Players learn to solve problems by being given the problem under conditions where the good solution appears often enough to be discovered. So you change the task, not the lecture. Want more switches of play? Two-touch in the central lane and free on the outside. Want faster counterpressing? Award a point for winning the ball back within five seconds.

The reason this outperforms instruction is not philosophical. Instructed behaviour is recalled and therefore slow, and it degrades under fatigue and pressure. Discovered behaviour is a habit, and habits are what you still have in the eightieth minute.

What this implies about drills

A practice without opposition trains a movement, not a decision, and decisions are the thing that separates levels. That is a strong claim and it has an obvious limit — technique does need isolated repetition, particularly in young players. But it explains why the rondo is not a warm-up: it contains numerical superiority, third-man combinations, receiving on the half-turn and the five-second counterpress, all under real pressure, in twenty square metres.

Open problems

Things that are genuinely unsettled. Anyone who states these confidently is guessing.

Question

Has positional play become predictable?When every good side occupies the same five lanes, the defensive answer is easier to prepare. Whether the response is more sophisticated positional play or something categorically different is the central open argument in European coaching.

Question

Can relationism be taught?Or does it require a football culture — years of street and youth football together — that cannot be installed in a professional squad on a two-year contract? Nobody has demonstrated it can be built from scratch.

Question

How far do set pieces go?They are the fastest-professionalising phase in the sport and the least constrained by the run of play. There is no obvious ceiling, and no consensus on whether the eventual answer is better defending or a rule change.

Question

What is possession actually worth?Field tilt correlates with winning; possession share much less so. Whether possession is a cause of control, a symptom of it, or occasionally a substitute for it remains genuinely contested.

Question

Where is the goalkeeper's ceiling?The keeper became an outfield player in build-up within one generation. Whether that continues — a keeper as a genuine first-phase playmaker — or whether the risk curve has already turned is unresolved.

Question

Can we measure off-ball play?Everything decisive happens away from the ball, and public data records the ball. Tracking data is closing the gap privately. Until it opens up, most public analysis is measuring the visible fifth of the sport.

How to hold all of this

The temptation after reading two volumes is to pick a school and become an advocate. Resist it. Every system in chapter eight is a coherent answer to a real problem and every one of them has a bill attached, and the coaches worth learning from are conspicuously undogmatic about which they use against whom. The transferable skill is not knowing the systems.
